through numerous court decisions, and enforcement agency opinions,
that you must consider to understand the current law on particular
issues. The descriptions following the links below provide only
a brief summary of each law, regulation, or site. You must examine
the linked material to learn the specific provisions and coverage
of the laws and regulations.
State of California
The DFEH administers the Fair Employment and Housing Act, that prohibits discrimination
in employment and housing; the California Family Right Act, that provides leaves for family
health conditions; the Unruh Civil Rights Act, that prohibits discrimination in housing
and public accommodations; and, the Ralph Civil Rights Act, that provides protection from
hate crimes.

This state law prohibits employment discrimination because
of the race, religious creed, color, national origin, ancestry,
physical disability, mental disability, medical condition, marital
status, sex, and sexual orientation, and describes the powers and procedures of the
California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, and the
California Fair Employment and Housing Commission.
Start at section 12940 for the provisions regarding discrimination in employment.
The Family Rights Act concerning family and medical leaves begins
at section 12945.1. Section 12940(k) concerns reasonable accommodation
for physical and mental disabilities. Section 12941(a) concerns
age discrimination against persons age 40 and older. Section 12945
